Chelsea ‘open talks’ with Neymar with Todd Boehly set to spend big again

Chelsea are set to continue their spending spree this summer, with PSG outcast Neymar said to be one of their chief targets.

While he picked up a fifth Ligue 1 title this season, Neymar’s stock has fallen in Paris with the club again falling short in the Champions League, despite the presence of the Brazilian, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

It has already been confirmed Messi and Sergio Ramos will leave the club this summer and it looks as if Neymar will follow suit. The 31-year-old has naturally been linked with the Premier League, with Manchester United and Newcastle already mentioned as potential destinations.

According to reports in France, Chelsea have officially opened talks with PSG, who would be willing to let Neymar go for the right price. A sale could help free up funds in their pursuit of Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva.

Blues co-owner Todd Boehly is said to be a fan of Neymar but it is unclear if new head coach Mauricio Pochettino is too. Neymar’s PSG departure does seem to be inevitable though, with his relationship with the club’s fanbase at rock bottom.

Last month, fans were filmed chanting for the board to resign outside club headquarters before further clips showed a group of supporters visiting the home of Neymar and calling for him to move on.

Messi was also believed to be the target of frustration with fans chanting for the World Cup winner to leave, having jeered the Argentinian in home matches. The protest prompted a rebuke from the club, who condemned the fans’ behaviour in a hard-hitting statement.

“Paris St Germain most strongly condemns the intolerable and insulting actions of a small group of individuals that took place on Wednesday,” the statement read.

“Whatever the differences of opinion, nothing justifies such actions. The club gives its full support to its players, its staff and all those targeted by such shameful behaviour.”
