Chelsea have a lot to thank Antonio Conte for as they close in on Romelu Lukaku. A £97m fee has been agreed with Inter Milan for the Belgian’s services, who is set to have a medical today.
Conte has inadvertently pushed Lukaku to join Chelsea after he resigned as Inter Milan manager this summer.
The Belgium international got on brilliantly with the 52-year-old, who got the best out of him as a striker.
Together, they won Inter their first Serie A title in 10 years while Lukaku scored 30 times in all competitions last season.
Nothing better exhibited that love for one another more than the striker’s Instagram message to his old manager in an emotional post.
After Conte’s departure, Lukaku said: “[In] 2014 we spoke for the first time and we have had a bond ever since.
“We had many moments to work together but only god knows why it never happened earlier.
“You came at the right time and basically changed me as a player and made me even stronger mentally and more importantly we won together!
“Winning is and it’s all that matters to you and I’m glad that I have had you as a coach.
“I will keep your principles for the rest of my career ( physical preparation, mental and just the drive to win…) it was a pleasure to play for you!
“Thank you for all what you did. I owe you a lot.. @antonioconte.”
According to Sky Sports, Lukaku’s position on staying at Inter changed when Conte left with Chelsea using that to their advantage.
And the Blues will surely benefit from having a reliable goalscorer in their squad – a problem they had last season as the likes of Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham struggled to convert chances.
They should not have that problem with Lukaku, who will return to the Premier League a much well-rounded player.
It remains to be seen what will happen with Abraham, who has courted attention from Atalanta, AS Roma and Arsenal.
