Chelsea join Jadon Sancho transfer race as Thomas Tuchel plans summer swoop
Chelsea have entered the race to sign Borussia Dortmund winger and England international Jadon Sancho this summer.
The 21-year-old has netted 12 goals for the Bundesliga side this campaign and provided 13 direct assists after the club resisted strong interest in his signature from Manchester United last summer.
One-time Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel is said to be among the player’s admirers and would be keen to take the star to Stamford Bridge, as reported in German outlet Bild and as cited by the Mail.
The reports indicate that there is a gentleman’s agreement in place between Sancho and the Bundesliga club following their resistance to sell the star last summer.
Last year’s proposed move to United never fully took off the ground due to Dortmund’s £100million price tag but it is reported that valuation has now dropped to a more affordable £78million.
That may still prove to be prohibitive in the current climate with football still feeling the economic ramifications of the Covid-19 pandemic, with many sides without fans at matches for over a year.
United are still believed to have retained a strong interest in Sancho, although they did sign youngsters Amad and Facundo Pellestri a last year with a view to being a long-term solution in the right-wing position.
Liverpool are still thought to maintain an interest in the Borussia Dortmund star but they may need to prioritise investment in other areas of their first-team squad, and potentially missing out on a Champions League place could damage their financial prospects.
Sancho has been a revelation in Germany since joining from Manchester City in 2017, establishing himself as a first-team star and consistently producing among the best attacking numbers in the Bundesliga.
The winger has netted 46 goals for the club and provided 62 assists across 133 appearances, while he has also scored three goals in 18 international caps for England.
