Frank Lebouf has concerns that Chelsea’s title chances could collapse in a way that would resemble Frank Lampard’s downfall. Chelsea legend Lampard was dismissed as Blues boss after his side slipped down the league table following a dramatic decline in results.

The Blues found themselves ninth in the Premier League in January 2020 when Lampard was jettisoned, just over a month after they were temporarily at the summit.

Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium was the second time Thomas Tuchel’s side dropped points in a week after being held at home to Manchester United.

And Lebouf, who spent five years of his playing career at Stamford Bridge, is worried about a repeat scenario of Lampard’s demise.

“The football they play is interesting but it’s not convincing, in the way that I don’t feel the strength that I used to see months ago,” Lebouf told ESPN FC.

“Remember, last year before Frank Lampard was sacked, they were [third] and people were saying, ‘Chelsea may be a contender’.

“And then something happened in December and they lost against Arsenal on December 26, and they were nowhere near it before Tuchel came in.

“So, I don’t know if history is going to be repeated, but let’s see. But I’m not happy with what I see. It’s interesting, but how can you lose after you lead 2-1, conceding two stupid goals like that?”

The malaise under Lampard last year currently has no resemblance to Tuchel’s situation at Chelsea.

Despite a frustrating week, Tuchel’s impressive men have lost just two games all season and his side sit just two points off the top of the league table.

The unlikely Champions League triumph last season gives the German boss more than enough credit and a title charge still looks very much on the cards in west London.

Defeat to high-flying West Ham in a London derby was frustrating for Blues fans, particularly as it could have been avoided after goalkeeping errors and a fluke goal.

But optimism is still high and Tuchel will benefit when midfielders Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante return from injury.

Tuchel bemoaned big errors in the defeat to the Hammers but, unlike Lebouf, is not concerned about a drop in performance levels.

“I didn’t see our performance dip against Manchester United or today, it was enough to win the game,” he said.

“We gave easy goals away, this is unusual – big mistakes that lead to big chances and easy goals. We’ve done this against United, Watford, and today.

“We are not good enough in the details at the moment.

“This is a game about details, I can only repeat myself. Without doing big mistakes, there’s a big chance we win this game.”
