Chelsea are at a crossroads in negotiations with Antonio Rudiger with alarm bells ringing on the defender’s immediate future, according to reports. The Blues have been the standout team in the Premier League so far through the opening nine games.

They sit top of the table with only Liverpool scoring more than their 23 goals so far.

But most impressive of all has been Chelsea’s defensive record with Tuchel’s side conceding just three goals.

Edouard Mendy has played a huge role in shoring up Chelsea’s backline, but Tuchel’s implementation of three at the back has also brought out the best of a number of players.

Andreas Christensen appears to have found top form while the likes of Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah have also impressed.

Rudiger though is seen as Tuchel’s first choice when the Germany international is fit.

The 28-year-old was frozen out by Frank Lampard last season, but Rudiger has been re-born under Tuchel.

He’s started all but one of Chelsea’s nine league matches and has played every minute in the Champions League group matches.

However, Rudiger’s future beyond this season looks uncertain with his current contract running out next summer.

DON’T MISS

According to The Athletic, Chelsea have been locked in negotiations with Rudiger’s camp to strike a new deal.

Tuchel is said to be powerless in pushing the club to give Rudiger what he wants.

The centre-back supposedly wants to double his salary to earn £200,000 a week, but Chelsea have only offered £140,000 a week so far.

Chelsea’s reluctance to meet Rudiger’s demands may have stemmed from their confidence in keeping Rudiger at the club.

But growing speculation that Rudiger would be willing to walk away if he’s not given what he wants has caused an ‘alarming’ situation at Chelsea.

Rudiger is not the only defender out of contract next summer with Christensen also a free agent in less than 12 months.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva face a similar situation, but it appears as though Chelsea are relaxed about their situation.

Talks have died down over a new deal for Christensen though after their initial offer during the summer months.

Christensen has indicated that his preference would be to stay at Chelsea, but it’s clear that he’s considering his options at this time.
