Chelsea have had a rough few weeks with injuries to key players including N’Golo Kante, Romelu Lukaku and Mateo Kovacic. But one that has particularly rankled has been the loss of Ben Chilwell.
Chelsea might have just been handed a perfect chance to help alleviate their growing injury concerns.
And that might include thanking former manager Rafa Benitez, who has had his own problems at Everton.
As well as poor performances and a total of one win in 10 in the Premier League, there have been issues with players behind closed doors.
Particularly vice-captain Lucas Digne, who was dropped against Arsenal on Monday night as a result of a clash of personalities in training.
According to The Athletic, the Frenchman has not been happy with his role under Benitez and it led to a heated moment between the two.
The ex-Barcelona star’s future is now up in the air and a situation could even evolve that would see him leave in January.
Enter Chelsea – a club desperate to fix a major hole in their squad.
Of all the injuries Thomas Tuchel has had to deal with, none have been tougher than the one at left-back – where Chilwell is absent.
While the club have yet to put a timeframe on the defender’s return, it is likely that he will miss the rest of the season after demanding his anterior cruciate ligament.
Marcos Alonso has filled in for the former Leicester star but has proved a liability with Chelsea dropping some alarming points already to the likes of Manchester United and West Ham.
Saul Niguez has been mentioned as a potential option while Callum Hudson-Odoi has been sparingly used in the role but has looked unconvincing from a defensive point of view.
Digne has previously been scouted by Chelsea, while his ability from set-pieces is a bonus for a side that also lost their corner-taker through Chilwell’s injury.
It was only a year ago when the France international signed a new contract with Everton but his time at Goodison Park could be cut short now.
Benitez insisted he just wanted Ben Godfrey at left-back but Digne hit back at his manager’s suggestion on social media.
“Don’t believe everything you read,” he said on Instagram. “I was sad not to play. I was looking forward to be playing for Everton as always.
“The manager chose not to select me. That’s football.”
But that could only play into Chelsea’s hands, who will be hoping that Alonso can at least keep fit until January.
