Chelsea gaffe as Blues forget to play Champions League anthem
Kepa comments on reports Boehly called Chelsea's season 'embarrassing'
Chelsea were involved a bizarre gaffe minutes before their Champions League quarter-final clash against Real Madrid on Tuesday night. Supporters at Stamford Bridge and online were left baffled when the competition’s iconic anthem didn’t play as the two teams lined up on the pitch.
The Blues entered a cauldron of noise, knowing they had to overturn a 2-0 deficit against the European champions to progress to the semi-finals.
But what followed will have felt like a bad omen ahead of the most important game of their season. As UEFA’s camera started the iconic pan across both teams as they lined up on the pitch, very quiet Champions League music started to play.
The theme then faded out, prompting confusion at the ground and at home as viewers could only hear crowd noise.
BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher remarked that someone behind the scenes may have turned the speakers off during the anthem.

@iPrayag tweeted: “Did Chelsea just mute the Champions League anthem in the stadium to make sure Madrid don’t turn into aura-monsters?”
@BHRock2022 joked: “Someone forgot to turn the Champions League anthem on at Stamford Bridge. Todd Boehly is just blasting out the Top Gun theme tune instead.”

He then added: “Maybe Chelsea played the Champions League anthem really quietly so people could hear Todd Boehly shout his score prediction from his box.”

Chelsea, 17 points outside the top four in 11th in the Premier League, will know that their season is likely over with elimination against Real.
