Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as Chelsea boss back in January brought about several changes to how the Blues operate, with Tuchel most notably switching to a back three. The switch has offered Chelsea’s full-backs the chance to get forward more and Ben Chilwell has begun to flourish in the new system.

Legendary Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole was impressed with Chilwell’s display in the Blues’ 1-0 win over Manchester City in their FA Cup semi-final clash, calling him a “constant threat down the left”.

A second-half goal from Hakim Ziyech was enough to earn Chelsea the win and they will now face either Leicester or Southampton in the final.

Speaking to BBC Sport at half-time, Cole said of Chilwell: “He’s been in good defensive positions, he’s been a constant threat down the left. Chilwell has been bright.”

The England international has previously spoken about becoming a “different player” under Tuchel, saying: “When the manager came in it was a clean slate for everyone.

“I didn’t play the first three or four games which could have got me down, but I used it as an opportunity to work harder, and ask the manager questions in training about where he thought I could improve my game to get more game time.

“When I get the opportunity to play I want to prove to him I should be playing more regularly.

“I’m sure the other players, Marcos [Alonso] included, are doing the same thing.

“That competition is very healthy.

“With the stage of the season we are at, with quarter-finals and semi-finals in the cups, and our league positioning trying to finish in the top four, it’s very important we have everyone in the squad challenging each other for 11 shirts, training hard and playing hard because they want to be in the team.

“I am always trying to improve every day which is a given.

“I’m a different player as playing left wing-back wasn’t something I was used to before.

“Since the manager has come in that’s where Marcos and myself have been playing.

“I’ve been asking manager lots of questions on how he feels I can improve my game in that position and feel like I’m definitely improving.”

Chilwell also spoke about wanting to emulate Cole, who won eight major honours during his time at Stamford Bridge, adding: “When I first came here I was keen to meet him [Cole] so I could pick his brains.

“He was pretty similar – he came at a young age and ended up becoming a Chelsea legend.

“If I can try to replicate the career he’s had here, I will be pretty happy.”
