Some Chelsea fans want Thomas Tuchel to give Marc Guehi a chance in the Blues’ first-team squad this season. The on-loan centre-back played 66 minutes as Swansea City lost 3-1 at home to Premier League leaders Manchester City in the FA Cup on Wednesday night.

Guehi was arguably culpable for City’s opening goal when a Kyle Walker cross found its way into the back of the net, the defender failing to track the run of Ferran Torres behind him, although the goal went to Walker rather than the Spain winger.

Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus put City out of sight by the 50th minute with two strikes shortly after half-time, though Guehi could not do too much about either.

BT Sport commentator Martin Keown said in the first half after the defender won a foul: “You can see Guehi’s got a bit, hasn’t he?”

And he added in the second half: “Special mention for Guehi going off. I thought he did exceptionally well.”

Swansea fans have grown to love Guehi, who they have labelled the best defender in the Championship at just 20 years of age.

Against City, Guehi managed more clearances, tackles and interceptions than his two fellow starting centre-halves Ben Cabango and Joel Latibeaudiere.

His passing rate of 88 per cent was also markedly superior to the duo while he won all four of his ground duels, compared to Cabango’s 33 per cent win rate and Latibeaudiere’s 66 per cent.

Guehi’s highlight came when Raheem Sterling tried to stand him up one-on-one in the box and he wrestled the England winger off the ball to win back possession.

Chelsea fans loved the moment, sharing a clip of it many times over on social media, and several believe there is a place in Tuchel’s squad for the young Ivory Coast-born defender.

Guehi played on the left side of a back three with Tuchel, since replacing the sacked Frank Lampard last month, also employing a similar formation at Stamford Bridge.

“Guehi has to be in our squad next year he’s class,” said one, while another similarly posted: “I’ve seen enough, guehi is class.”

Another tweeted: “Guehi has looked comfortable for the most part. Squad option/premier league loan for him next season.”

One said: “Guehi is the way forward” as another predicted: “I have a feeling that Sarr x Guehi is gonna be crucial for Chelsea in the future.”

“Marc Guehi has shown why he is a future Chelsea star in those first 45 minutes. Not phased at all. An incredible player,” one said of Guehi, who was taken off shortly after the hour mark.

Another Chelsea fan wrote: “Would like to see Guehi promoted to the 1st team next season, been solid in a back 3 for Swansea this season so far and looking good again tonight!”

One even went as far to say that Chelsea should not be chasing RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.

They tweeted: “Marc Guehi is very good, we shouldn’t be going for Upamecano at all.”

Guehi has made 26 appearances for Steve Cooper’s Swansea this season having joined the South Wales club from Chelsea mid-way through last season, having his loan extended at the Liberty Stadium in the summer.

The 20-year-old has made two first-team appearances at Chelsea, playing in League Cup clashes with Grimsby and Man United under Lampard in September and October 2019.
