‘Finally the send off Diego Costa deserved’: Chelsea fans give a standing ovation to their former striker when he’s taken off by Wolves at Stamford Bridge… and he chooses to walk the long way off to go right past the diehard Blues fans!

  • Diego Costa played the opening 57 minutes of Wolves’ 3-0 defeat at Chelsea
  • It was the striker’s return to Stamford Bridge since his acrimonious exit in 2017

  • Costa’s route took him past the diehard Blues fans in the Matthew Harding Stand

Diego Costa enjoyed being back at Stamford Bridge, soaking up the cheers from all corners of the ground after being subbed off in Wolves visit to Chelsea.

Costa, who played for the Blues between 2014 and 2017, started for his new club Wolves on Saturday, and enjoyed a standing ovation from the Chelsea fans when he left the pitch after 57 minutes.

Chelsea were leading at that point 2-0 with a goal by Kai Havertz in first-half stoppage time, and an additional strike by Christian Pulisic nine minutes after the restart. In the end, Chelsea ran out 3-0 winners, with Armando Broja scoring adding the third in the 90th minute.

Blues fans started singing the 34-year-old’s name, and Costa walked around the perimeter of the pitch after coming off, a route which took him right in front of the diehard Chelsea fans in the Matthew Harding Stand, who cheered loudly for him.

Chelsea fans felt that it was a celebration worthy for their former striker, who left in acrimonious circumstances after falling out with then manager Antonio Conte, before finally being allowed to rejoin Atletico Madrid.

One fan took to Twitter to say: ‘What a moment that was, Diego Costa receiving a standing ovation worthy of any Chelsea hero. You wonderful man, Diego, you wonderful man’.

Another wrote: ‘Diego Costa getting probably the best standing ovation in Stamford bridge history’, while a third added: ‘Finally the send off Diego Costa deserved. LEGEND.’

Twitter reaction from Chelsea fans noted the celebration was a deserved send off for Costa

However, Costa’s decision also angered some fans of his current club, with one writing: ‘I get that he played for them and they love him but Costa milking it that much and walking along high fiving the Chelsea fans, he does realise they are still the opposition. didn’t like that at all’.

Others questioned the timing of Costa’s reaction, when his current side were down. One tweeted: ‘only Diego Costa would do a lap of honor in the middle of his team losing 2-0’.

Wolves, who continue to look for a new manager after firing Bruno Lage last weekend, will hope for better luck when they host Nottingham Forest on October 15.
