Mason Mount has become the starlet of Chelsea over the course of the past two seasons with some stellar performances – but if reports are to be believed, the wages of other players could be a stumbling block.

Mount burst onto the scene in the 2019-20 season after spells away from Stamford Bridge on loan at Vitesse and Derby County.

The Portsmouth-born youngster has played all but four league games since the start of his breakthrough season, showing consistency and creativity to break into the European Champions’ team.

And now after two years of consistent football, Mount is after a new contract.

A report by Goal claims Mount’s current contract is worth £75,000 a week, a relatively low wage for a key player in the top six.

Chelsea won’t pursue a deal instantly with the club prioritising deals for Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Trevoh Chalobah first.

But there may be stumbling blocks as the Englishman reportedly feels he deserves to be on the same money as duo Kai Havertz and Timo Werner – which may prove to be difficult.

Mount has been named ‘star boy’ by his team-mates after his superb rise.

And his link-up play with Romelu Lukaku has only confirmed that he has a big role to play at Stamford Bridge in the future.

“I think that football right now is about connections,” Tuchel said.

“Romelu, I feel, has a strong connection with Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic.

“They look for each other and have an understanding. Everybody else maybe lacks it a bit, so they need to learn and understand and adapt.”

There have been suggestions that Mount looks tired after less than a month of pre-season.

And that is something the midfielder has been aware of himself.

“After what happened in the Euros and the experiences that we went through, it probably did take longer [to get over it than usual],” Mount said.

“You do reflect on how it went as a team and me personally on my game. It was such a heartbreak for us to go all the way and fall at the final hurdle.

“We now have to look at the next goal and challenge that is coming up.”
