Chelsea dressing room’s ‘thoughts’ on Mauricio Pochettino as sack calls begin
What has gone wrong at Chelsea after billion-pound transfer spree?
Mauricio Pochettino reportedly retains the backing of the Chelsea dressing room despite kicking off the new season with a torrid run of results. Pressure is already ramping up on the Blues manager, with no sign of a notable improvement on a dreadful 2022/23 campaign which saw them finish in the bottom half of the Premier League.
Pochettino was drafted in to restore unity at Stamford Bridge after Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard all failed to find a winning recipe last term. Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have spent groundbreaking sums of money to improve the squad, but the investment is yet to translate into improvements on the pitch.
It was the same old story on Sunday as the Blues lost 1-0 to Aston Villa, with Malo Gusto’s red card rubbing salt in the wounds. Chelsea have now gone three matches without scoring, and their only Premier League win under Pochettino came at home to newly-promoted Luton Town.
A return of five points from the Argentine’s first six league matches has left fans and pundits to wonder whether his appointment was wise after all.

But The Daily Mail claim that Pochettino faces no such uncertainty from those in the dressing room. The 51-year-old is believed to have ‘full backing’ from his players, which should give him plenty of time to steady the ship and turn results around.
Pochettino, famed for his man-management skills, is reportedly well-liked by his squad. Claims that his door is always open for a conversation are thought to have gone down well behind the scenes.

The fixture list isn’t about to get any easier for Chelsea, with in-form Brighton next up in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. Away trips to Fulham and Burnley will follow, ahead of a crunch clash with title-chasing Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
After the defeat to Villa, which saw Ollie Watkins decide the game, Pochettino gave a brutally honest interview in which he called on his players to ‘grow up’. “We need to grow up like a team, not only in an individual way,” said the former Paris Saint-Germain manager.
“I think players like Nico [Williams] who are so young and feeling the Premier League, they need time. In this type of game, we are competing and want to win and football is about winning.
“But also players, when they are young, need to learn, and experience and make mistakes. That’s why we feel disappointed as there are too many situations like this.”
