Chelsea can now sign USA star they chased in January ‘for just £17m’

Premier League transfer round-up as Nkunku joins Chelsea

Chelsea could now land one of their January transfer targets for almost half of what they offered six months ago, according to reports. The Blues are expected to undergo another squad shuffle as Mauricio Pochettino arrives to take hold of the reins at Stamford Bridge.

The West London outfit is facing up to the reality of no European football next season after recording a 12th-placed finish in the last campaign – their worst since 1994.

But since American billionaire Todd Boehly took control of the club, a little over 12 months ago, a staggering 17 players have moved to Chelsea, at a cost of over £553m.

That list includes eight players during the transfer window, with the likes of club-record signing Enzo Fernandez and winger Mykhailo Mudryk pushing the dressing room to bursting point.

But one player they weren’t able to capture was Valencia midfielder Yunus Musah. Back on January’s transfer deadline day, multiple reports claimed that Chelsea had made a verbal £30m offer to the LaLiga club for the USMNT star, but that offer was swiftly rejected.

The Blues are believed to have been impressed by the 20-year-old’s performances at the Qatar World Cup, but could not convince the Spanish side to part company with their star man.

However, that picture appears to have changed dramatically now. According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the deal could now be back on and for a lot less than what was offered six months ago.

Writing in his latest Caught Offside substack, Romano said: “Valencia are open to selling Yunus Musah this summer after they turned down all approaches back in January, including a verbal bid from Chelsea. I understand a €20m fee could now be enough to sign USMNT midfielder. AC Milan have included Musah in their list.”

Romano’s claim means that Pochettino could now snap up Musah for just £17m in what would be a departure from the Blue’s recent wild spending trait.

Born in New York City, Musah spent seven years in Arsenal’s youth academy before moving to Valencia and eventually breaking into their first team in 2020.

He represented England at four different youth levels before switching allegiance to his native USA, for whom he has been capped 27 times. He was eligible to play for the US, England, Ghana and Italy but accepted a call-up from the US three years ago.

ESPN is also reporting AC Milan’s interest, with Chelsea expected to face plenty of competition from other interested parties.
