Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel may drop late January transfer hint with Wolves team selection

Chelsea: New boss Thomas Tuchel in profile

New Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel may have some immediate transfer business to take care of following his first match in charge this evening. The Blues confirmed Tuchel as Frank Lampard’s replacement on Tuesday with the German coach taking charge of his first training session later that same day.

And he will hoping to have an immediate impact on the pitch tonight when Chelsea return to action against Wolves.

All eyes will be on Tuchel’s team selection to see whether he ruffles a few feathers with some big changes or if he sticks with relatively the same formula from under Lampard.

Kai Havertz and Timo Werner in particular will be keen to impress having struggled since joining last summer.

But Tuchel could also have to deal with his first piece of transfer business depending on his matchday squad.

Billy Gilmour had been slowly working himself back into contention under Lampard and played the full 90 minutes in the FA Cup win over Luton at the weekend.

The 19-year-old is highly regarded at Chelsea with high hopes that he can realise his full potential at Stamford Bridge.

But Gilmour is desperate to play more minutes now and according to The Athletic, he was planning to speak with Lampard about his playing time this week.

It is claimed that Gilmour was considering leaving on loan with just a few days remaining in the January transfer window.

DON’T MISS

He’s yet to start in the Premier League since returning from injury at the start of December, playing a total of 34 minutes.

And the report states that Tuchel’s arrival at Stamford Bridge has now ‘complicated matters’ for Gilmour.

Whether or not Gilmour is included in the matchday squad to face Wolves tonight could determine if the midfielder leaves on loan.

He’s desperate to ensure of his place in Steve Clarke’s Scotland side for this summer’s European Championships.

Gilmour isn’t short of admirers in the Premier League either with the likes of Aston Villa, West Brom and Crystal Palace all said to be considering a loan move.

Lampard had made it clear on a number of occasions that he saw Gilmour as a vital part of his first-team set up.

But Chelsea already have a vast amount of options in midfield with the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Matteo Kovacic and Jorginho all vying for a place in the starting line-up.

Ultimately, the decision will rest upon Tuchel’s shoulders but his team selection tonight could seemingly prompt a difficult conversation with Gilmour.
