Chelsea may have made it to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night but Thomas Tuchel was not entirely happy. One moment involving captain Cesar Azpilicueta particularly incensed the German coach.
Chelsea will take on Tottenham in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after beating Brentford on Wednesday night.
But it was not all their own way after it took 80 minutes to break down the Bees while Tuchel fielded several youngsters, including Harvey Vale, Xavier Simons and Jude Soonsup-Bell.
The German coach ended up putting his big guns on – including Jorginho, Reece James and Christian Pulisic – to get the job done.
All three were integral to getting the goals in after James’ cross was diverted into the Brentford net by Pontus Jansson in the 80th minute.
Five minutes later, Pulisic was fouled in the box allowing Jorginho to double the lead and claim the victory but Tuchel was not happy.
In fact, in the early exchanges of the match, the Blues boss lost his cool with Azpilicueta after his wild shot that sent the ball into orbit.
According to Football London, Tuchel was spotted screaming at his captain for wasting such a brilliant chance in front of the younger lads.
The Spaniard was the beacon of experience on the pitch for Chelsea, having made 443 appearances for the west London side.
Vale, Simons and Soonsup-Bell, on the other hand, were making their debuts – but all three were taken off before the end of the match.
And while Tuchel was furious at the moment, Azpilicueta actually went on to have a very assured match for the Blues.
There were also appearances for fringe players such as Saul Niguez and Ross Barkley while Trevor Chalobah was also a star at the back for Chelsea.
Tuchel said: “I’m very pleased. It was a brilliant performance and a brilliant result so I’m very happy for the players. They showed great mentality.
“They were very disciplined, very structured, and within that structure we performed individually. It was very well done from them.
“It was a brilliant result given the circumstances, the line-up and the situation. Some of the guys who played were youngsters and the other guys had not many minutes like Trevoh, Saul and Barkley but they stepped up in a tough place.”
