Thomas Tuchel has hinted that a way to accommodate both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner may feature more prominently after they featured alongside each other in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Tottenham at the weekend.
Lukaku came in to replace Werner last season after a rather uninspiring start to proceedings in west London for the German.
Werner scored just six Premier League goals in 31 outings after a £48million move from RB Leipzig last summer.
And after a magnificent show of form upon his arrival, Lukaku has made the striker spot his own.
Werner may feel he has every right to be aggrieved after he was seen as the man of the moment for Chelsea’s campaign last year.
But in his press conference ahead of Wednesday’s game against Aston Villa, Tuchel admitted he had a plan to fit both of them together, despite Werner’s poor debut season.
“He gave us a clear impression of how dangerous he and Romelu can be together,” Tuchel said about his countryman.
“There was some disappointment from the Euros and the first games where I don’t think he was happy with his performances.
“The stuff that you don’t see, he is more relaxed, more fluid in his movements and that is why he came on early against Tottenham. There are clear signs he is in a good way.”
Werner had a couple of chances towards the end of the game to make it 3-0, but some admittedly poor passes into his path failed to give him the chance to see the game off.

It ended 3-0 anyway, but Tuchel noted Werner’s determination to get into those positions – something which could come in very useful over the course of this season.
With injuries to Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech showing inconsistency, Werner is likely to most often be used in a left-wing berth alongside Lukaku.
But there is a possibility the pair could also be used in a two-up-top system should Tuchel deviate away from his usual 3-4-3 set-up.
Tuchel added: “It shows also how Romelu is, he knows how a striker feels that lacks goals.

“For me, Timo was in dangerous positions and wasn’t too far out, in and around the box. He had the assist which was well done, this is important.
“How he trains, not only in quality but the attitude. He is more free in his movement and with more confidence. Sometimes it needs time.”
Chelsea will meanwhile look to advance to the next round of the Carabao Cup with a win over Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
