Chelsea star Reece James could end up being moved into a midfield role that will help Gareth Southgate. And Thomas Tuchel can aid that change by leaning on his experience as Borussia Dortmund manager.
England boss Southgate has so many options at right-back that he sometimes does not know what to do with them all.
Against Andorra over the international break, the Three Lions coach fielded three – Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier and James.
Arguably, Kyle Walker is the top choice as well, only adding to the abundance of full-backs in the England camp.
Their quality is so good that it is difficult to leave them all out and it helps to be versatile – with Trippier playing on the left-hand side.
James and Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, have been battling for a midfield role as well as at right-back.
But the Chelsea star might have the edge over his Liverpool rival due to his manager, who has done a similar trick in the past.
While at Borussia Dortmund, Tuchel brought in Raphael Guerreiro from Lorient during the summer he helped Portugal win Euro 2016.
Despite being a left-back, the German coach deployed the defender in midfield to huge success – where he became a brilliant playmaker as well as a full-back.
Here is how James can benefit by adding another string to his bow under Tuchel’s management.
The England international has played in midfield before, even becoming a star in Wigan Athletic’s squad in the position during his loan spell there.
But Tuchel can help him master that position, whether that be more of an attacking threat or more defensive.
Doing so would aid the Three Lions massively as it will allow Southgate to include another top right-back who has versatility.
And Chelsea would benefit too, with midfield an area that Tuchel wanted to strengthen in the summer after a failed plot to sign Declan Rice.
Saul Niguez was brought in but having James there will also help his options ahead of a long campaign that includes the FIFA Club World Cup tournament.
