Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino under added pressure as Caicedo’s wages emerge

Should Chelsea's owners be entering the dressing room? | Football Digest

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino will have very few excuses if he cannot get the best out of Moises Caicedo at Stamford Bridge. The Ecuadorian midfielder led the big-money signings that have arrived under Todd Boehly and co in a £115million deal after they beat Liverpool to his signature.

Despite signing for Chelsea as the Premier League’s most expensive player, his wages are said to be curiously modest across his eight-year contract. The owner of the agency that represents Caicedo – Epic Sports – has recently spoken out about the financial aspect of the move.

Ali Barat told Italian outlet Tuttosport: “Chelsea did an excellent investment by signing Moises. The player will receive £150k per week, he was on £60k per week at Brighton. He’s a mix between (Jude) Bellingham and N’Golo Kante.”

Caicedo has been given a relatively modest £150,000-a-week salary by Chelsea, despite many more players in the league – and even at Chelsea – earning a significantly higher wage. One element that Pochettino likely will not have to worry about is Caicedo downing tools and sitting comfortably knowing that he is one of the highest earners in the division.

The transfer does not come without its own perils, however, as should Caicedo not live up to what the Blues chiefs believe his potential to be – the finger will likely be pointed towards Pochettino. So far the 21-year-old has made six appearances with mixed results, but the coach will hope that as a youthful Chelsea team continues to gel, his performances will improve as a consequence.

They will hope that mistakes such as the one in their 1-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest are few and far between, as the midfielder’s heavy touch saw him dispossessed before Taiwo Awoniyi scored the only goal of the game to take all three points at Stamford Bridge.

“We made one mistake and we cannot make it,” a frustrated Pochettino said at the time. “That is why we feel really disappointed. Football is about not making mistakes. We made one mistake and we paid for that.”

But Caicedo clearly has the backing of Pochettino and Chelsea as they were willing to spend £115m on him.

However, if Caicedo cannot replicate the form he enjoyed at Brighton then it is likely that criticism will be aimed in the direction of Chelsea boss Pochettino.
