Graham Potter has taken yet another dig at the Brighton fans who booed him on his return to his old club with Chelsea. The Blues were hammered 4-1 by Potter’s former team at the Amex Stadium on Saturday afternoon on a nightmare return for the English coach.

Brighton fans booed Potter as he walked towards his dugout and also jeered Marc Cucurella, their Player of the Season last year who left for Stamford Bridge in the summer, throughout. The home supporters repeatedly chanted: “You’re getting sacked in the morning!” and “Potter, what’s the score?”

That led the Chelsea manager, who only took over on September 8, to respond in his post-match press conference: “I have nothing to say sorry for or apologise for. I did a good job, you can see the team is a good team. I took over when they were fourth from bottom in the Premier League and were probably the third-worst team.

“There is a lot of money raised in terms of player sales and a lot of good players on the pitch. I hope for their sake, the next managers do as good a job.” And Potter has since taken another jab at the Seagulls’ support – insisting they never once produced an atmosphere as raucous as the Amex was at the weekend when he was at the club.

Asked about Brighton goalscorer Pervis Estupinan, who was named man of the match, shaking his hand during the match, Potter said: “There are some appreciative people out there.” And he added after his first ever defeat with Chelsea “It was not a nice afternoon for me at all, that’s for sure or anybody connected to the club. But it’s one in nine or ten.

“We will analyse it as best as we can and see how we can do better. I might have to give this one a bit of time to be honest because emotionally it’s tough. So you have to make sure you have a clear head when you analyse it.

“But I know the quality of the team we were playing against and the atmosphere. I never saw it like that in the three and a half years I was here. There was a motivated team and club, and that is okay.

“For whatever reason and I am not throwing anyone under the bus, we weren’t quite there. It would be easy for me to blame the players after a game but it isn’t as straightforward as that. Sometimes you get things wrong tactically.”

Brighton’s win over Chelsea was their first since 1933 and Potter thinks his Albion successor De Zerbi has an exciting project growing. He said of the Italian: “I can see the ideas, I can see what they are trying to do.

“I think they have been a little bit unlucky in games in terms of results but performances have been good. I think he is going to have an exciting time here. It’s a really good club with good players and players who suit how he wants to play.”
