Chelsea boss Frank Lampard yet to seek Roman Abramovich assurance over potential sacking

Chelsea: Lampard comes out fighting as pressure grows

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is yet to seek assurances from Roman Abramovich about his Stamford Bridge future, according to reports. The Blues have endured a difficult start to the Premier League season. And, after losing 2-0 to Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Wednesday night, links to Massimiliano Allegri, Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann and Avram Grant have arisen.

Chelsea were planning for a top-two finish at the start of the season.

They were the winners of a frugal transfer window after spending big on the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech back in the summer.

But Chelsea have struggled for consistency in the top flight this term, losing six of their 19 matches so far.

The Telegraph say the Blues would love to appoint RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann as a replacement for Lampard should results continue to worsen.

And they also claim the 42-year-old is yet to seek any assurances from Abramovich about his future at the club.

Chelsea have shown little mercy towards managers in the past.

Jose Mourinho was axed, twice, despite steering the club to three Premier League titles.

Carlo Ancelotti was relieved of his duties in the tunnel at Goodison Park back in 2011, after allowing Manchester United to win the crown.

And Chelsea sacked Antonio Conte in 2018, despite the Italian guiding them to the title during his first season in west London.

Nagelsmann is the favourite to take over but he won’t leave RB Leipzig just yet, not while they’re jostling with Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga prize.

And Craig Burley thinks they won’t go after Massimiliano Allegri, who remains out of work following his departure from Juventus back in 2019.

“Allegri is known for pragmatism. There is nothing wrong with that, but Abramovich has always tried to get away from that. He had enough of it under [Jose] Mourinho,” Burley told ESPN FC.

“I’m not a Thomas Tuchel fan. He’s done a decent job at [Borussia] Dortmund and PSG but I’m not on the Thomas Tuchel train.

“I look at Brendan Rodgers as, at least, the third best coach in the Premier League.

“Is there anybody better [except Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola]? No, not even close.”

Meanwhile, Blues star Mason Mount has backed Lampard despite the 2-0 defeat to Leicester being a chastening night for all involved.

“We know we are better than that,” he said.

“We have to have a look at ourselves, look at how we played, see where we can improve and come back stronger next game.

“We were beaten by the better side.

“We know they are a very good team and coming into the game we knew how tough it would be. They set up very well and sometimes you have to put your hands up and say they were better on the night.

“They took their chances. Two goals before half-time affected us and makes it difficult when you’re coming out in the second half.

“When you’re clinical in front of goal you are going to win games. We had a couple but we didn’t score.

“We are disappointed we didn’t win the game. We know we are better than that. We have to have a look at ourselves, look at how we played, see where we can improve and come back stronger next game.”
