Aston Villa have dealt reported suitors Chelsea and Manchester United a blow by confirming the surprise signing of Southampton striker Danny Ings. The Midlands club announced Ings’ arrival on Wednesday following next to no speculation.

Ings has signed a three-year deal at Villa Park, leaving Southampton after three years in a deal worth a reported £30million.

He scored 41 goals at St. Mary’s and helped Southampton fight against relegation last season.

The 29-year-old was a crucial part of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans but had entered the final 12 months of his contract with no intention to renew.

He becomes Villa’s fourth senior signing of the summer, in what appears to be a transfer window of significant change.
