Chelsea and Man City fans fight in Madrid as baton-wielding police storm brawl

Brawling Chelsea and Manchester City fans had to be separated by baton-wielding Madrid police on Tuesday.

Around 8,000 English supporters made the midweek trip to Spain to watch their clubs in their respective Champions League quarter-final second-leg showdowns. Chelsea faced Real Madrid on Tuesday at the Santiago Bernabeu while City take on Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday.

But video footage posted on social media showed the two sets of English supporters unable to put their rivalry to one side as they clashed in the capital’s Plaza Mayor Square. It all kicked off with fans of the two clubs initially confronting each other with shouting and chanting.

Things escalated when punches and drinks were thrown. And the Madrid police soon rushed in to try and restore order.

A video clip shows police quickly arriving on the scene to break up the brawl while wielding batons. Wearing helmets and riot gear, they were successfully able to push the group of City fans back.

City supporters will be hoping for more luck than their Blues counterparts when they take on Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. Chelsea were knocked out by Real in devastating fashion despite being up 3-0 at the Bernabeu at one stage.

They were all set to advance to semi-finals until Rodrygo forced extra-time with a stunning volley, before Karim Benzema’s header shattered Chelsea hearts by giving Real a 5-4 win on aggregate. City, who hold a slender 1-0 lead over Atletico from the first leg, will face Chelsea if they progress to the next round of Europe's most prestigious competition.
