Chelsea ‘agree to raise Marc Cucurella bid beyond £52m’ – but fans are pleased

Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton, leaving fans pleased despite being worth up to £10million more than planned.

The Blues have been going back and forth with the Seagulls over defender Cucurella, 24. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed earlier this week that the transfer had been agreed for £52m, with youngster Levi Colwill heading in the other direction.

Brighton publicly denied the "inaccurate reports from numerous media outlets" on Wednesday (August 3) evening, but it appears progress has now been made. Romano tweeted on Thursday night that Chelsea will pay £55m, with a potential £7m in add-ons.

Crucially, 19-year-old Colwill is no longer involved in Cucurella's move. He will head to the Amex on loan for the season in a separate deal.

Chelsea fans were relieved to hear the highly-rated centre-back, who spent last season with Championship side Huddersfield, would still be their player.

One wrote: "Good deal. Thank god Colwill won’t be leaving permanently, let’s hope we’ve learnt from past mistakes."

"Loan, thank god," commented another. A third simply said: "We have won again." And another posted: "Negotiating for a Colwill loan after that PR stunt Brighton tweeted about Cucurella, I like it, I like it a lot."

Romano was also happy with the outcome of the saga, cheekily tweeting: "Medical tests successfully completed for Marc Cucurella in London. Now time to check and sign documents… here we go, again. [winky face] Levi Colwill will join Brighton on loan, as expected."

He later added that Stamford Bridge chiefs had been working late into the night to get the deal completed as soon as possible. They would need to sign him before midday on Friday in order to register him to play against Everton in their Premier League opener this weekend.
