Kai Havertz believes that when this Chelsea team play with confidence, there are few teams anywhere that can match them, as the Blues prepare for the FA Cup final and then a Champions League showpiece showdown with Manchester City at the end of the month.

But Havertz admits Arsenal will be very dangerous and very motivated when the two London rivals go head-to-head at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

The £71million German forward had a slow start in English football after his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, as he was hit by a bout of Covid, and then a series of niggling injuries.

But since Thomas Tuchel arrived to take over as manager in January, the 21 year old has found his feet, operating in a ‘false 9’ role in Chelsea’s exciting attacking line up.

Three goals in his last seven games and a series of clever assists have seen Havertz blossom into one of Chelsea’s most important forwards at present.

At the same time, Chelsea have advanced to the FA Cup final, where they meet Leicester at Wembley on Saturday, the Champions League final, where they meet Man City – and consolidated their position in the top four in a spectacular run of just two defeats in 25 matches.

Havertz, whose team face Arsenal this midweek, insisted: “When we play with confidence, there are not many teams that can beat us.

“The mix is very good, between experience and young players who are very hungry.

“Technically, tactically, almost everything fits right now. So it’s very important that we keep the momentum, because there are more big games coming. We keep on working because there is always room to improve.”

Havertz added: “The competitiveness of the Premier League is very hard. You have five or six teams who can win the league, and many in the race for the top four.

“The most important thing is to keep winning, because the others are close to us. You can see how high the quality is  – it takes a lot to reach the top four but it’s our aim to finish there.

That was our aim at the start and it hasn’t changed. Our team has to play in the Champions League.”

Premier League talking points: Man Utd board’s benchmark, Tuchel v Pep

Tuchel has praised Havertz and team-mate Timo Werner for stepping out of their ‘comfort zone’ in Germany and taking on the Premier League.

Havertz said: “The Premier League did not surprise me. I knew it was a very high level of football. Everything is faster, harder, more intense – it’s very tough. But it’s fun.”

Havertz added: “Arsenal are also fighting for a European place. They are a very strong side, very dangerous.

It’s a London derby, so they will be very motivated. But if we play our best football we can win.”
