ChatGPT names all-time greatest combined XI of England and Scotland legends

In celebration of the first ever international football match taking place 150 years ago between England and Scotland, the two old rivals are set to face each other once again at Hampden Park.

Since their first clash back in 1872, which finished in a 0-0 draw, England and Scotland have played 115 times, with their Tuesday night battle at Hampden set to be the latest instalment in their long standing rivalry.

Over the years, there have been plenty of footballing legends to grace the fixture on both sides, which led Daily Star Sport to ask AI software ChatGPT to come up with an all-time England and Scotland legends XI.

In goal, ChatGPT has given World Cup winner Gordon Banks the gloves between the sticks, with the AI software calling him "one of the greatest goalkeepers of all-time", a statement which is pretty hard to argue against.

A mixed defence sees England pair George Cohen and Bill Wright make up one half of the back four, while Scots Danny McGrain and Willie Miller make up the other.

Cohen, who sadly passed away last year, was also part of England's 1966 World Cup winning campaign, making 37 appearances for the Three Lions during his international career. On the domestic front, he was also a one club man, playing his entire club career for Fulham whom he made 459 appearances for.

What do you make of ChatGPT's combined England and Scotland XI? Let us know in the comments section below.

While Wright was not part of the World Cup winning side, he did become the first footballer ever to earn 100 international caps, captaining England a whopping 90 times. His international career began in 1946 and ended in 1959. And like Cohen, he played his career out for one club, making just shy of 500 appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Celtic stalwart McGrain and Aberdeen legend Miller both played for Scotland during the 1970s and 1980s, with the former making 62 appearances, while the latter made 65. And Miller was also part of the famous Sir Alex Ferguson Aberdeen side that beat Real Madrid in the 1982-83 European Cup Winners' Cup.

‌ChatGPT's all-time XI midfield is dominated by England, with Bobby Charlton, who was the Three Lions top goalscorer for years before being surpassed by Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane, and Bryan Robson given the nod, whilst also shockingly adding in Bobby Moore to the engine room too (we'll assume he's at least occupying a CDM role).

The World Cup-winning captain was a centre-back, but for some reason or other, ChatGPT reckons he could do a role in midfield – alongside Liverpool and Scotland legend Graeme Souness.

‌‌And then up front, there's no room for Kane, Rooney or Kenny Dalglish. No, ChatGPT reckons the greatest strike force for its combine England and Scotland XI would be a partnership between Denis Law and Gary Lineker.

Law, who played for both Manchester United and Manchester City, scored 30 goals in 55 appearances for Scotland, while Lineker, scored 48 in 80, picking up the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup.

ChatGPT's combined England and Scotland XI (4-1-3-2): Banks; Cohen, Wright, McGrain, Miller; Moore; Charlton, Souness, Robson; Law, Lineker.
