The Champions League gets serious from here. Europe’s major clubs have their focus fixed firmly on the knock-out stages of the draw in Nyon, Switzerland.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea finished as group winners so will face a runner-up in the last-16, the most dangerous opponent of which is Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea, meanwhile, could draw any of Europe’s major sides such as Bayern Munich or Real Madrid after finishing second in their group. Follow Sportsmail’s JACK BEZANTS for live coverage of the Champions League last-16 draw as the Premier League quartet prepare to learn their fate.

Host commentator

Joe Cole, a Chelsea hero who played for Lille in the latter stages of his career, has warned the Blues that the French side would be a tough draw if they pick them out of the hat.

‘I would absolutely love that,’ Cole said on BT Sport at the prospect of the tie. ‘Lille are an outstanding young side and they are a fantastic club. Chelsea will fancy that one but let me tell you it will not be an easy game.’

We are around 10 minutes away from things beginning

Pot 1

Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Lille

Pot 2

Juventus, Salzburg, Chelsea,  Villarreal, Benfica, Inter Milan, Sporting CP, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain

A team can’t be drawn against another side in its own country, or one they faced in the group stage. So for example, Manchester City can’t be drawn against Chelsea or PSG in Pot B. Liverpool can’t get Atletico Madrid and United won’t meet Villarreal.

Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund both failed to make it out of their groups and are absent from today’s draw. Their attention, instead, is on the Europa League play-off draw which follows the Champions League one at midday.

It’s a wait of almost two months before we sees these matches played out.

The first leg is scheduled for February 14 and 15 and then Feb 22 and 23, while the return matches are March 8 and 9 and again the following week – March 15 and 16.

The away goals rule has been scrapped for the knock-out stages of the Champions League. Any tie that finished level after 180 minutes will go to extra-time and then penalties.

There are still some banana skins in the teams that finished as runner-up, make no mistake.

Paris Saint-Germain are the team Liverpool and United will be keen to avoid, while City obviously faced them in the group stages. Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid are also in Pot B, along with Villarreal, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and RB Salzburg.

Blues fans have one wish and one wish only for today’s draw: Lille.

Otherwise, it’s going to be a tricky one for the holders. Finishing second in their group means they could get one of Real Madrid, Ajax or Bayern Munich.

The eyes of European football turn to Nyon today where the last-16 of the Champions League is drawn out. All four English clubs make the knock-outs but its Chelsea who have the most to worry about as they will be drawn against a group winner. As ever, Sportsmail brings you all the updates as and when they happen.
