BT Sport announce Champions League and Europa League finals will be FREE on TV, via the app and on YouTube… as presenter Jake Humphrey insists it is ‘the right call after a hard year’

  • Manchester United face Villarreal in the Europa League final on Wednesday
  • Manchester City then take on Chelsea in Saturday’s Champions League final
  • BT Sport are showing both finals on TV, their website, app and YouTube channel
  • BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey insisted it was the right thing to do this year

BT Sport has announced that both the Champions League and Europa League finals will be broadcast free of charge for everyone in the UK.

Manchester City will be looking to win their first Champions League crown when they take on 2012 winners Chelsea on Saturday.

That all-Premier League showdown takes place in Porto three days after Manchester United aim to avoid their trophy drought stretching into a fourth year when they take on Villarreal in Gdansk in the Europa League final.

The broadcaster will also make access to the Europa League final between Manchester United (left) and Gerard Moreno’s Villarreal (right) available to everyone in the UK

And now BT Sport – the broadcaster which has shown European football in the UK since 2015 – has confirmed residents will be able to watch both finals through a series of different means, in addition to on television.

Both finals will be available for free on their website on the respective matchdays, while those who prefer YouTube will be able to stream the game on BT Sport’s channel on that platform.

Moreover, the European finals will also be available through the BT Sport app for all small screen and large-screen devices, which ranges from smart TVs and games consoles to tablets and mobile phones.

BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey also confirmed the news on Twitter and insisted that it was the right thing to do.

This season’s Europa League final takes place in Gdansk, Poland on Wednesday evening

‘For those asking on here, YES, BT Sport have decided to again make the European Finals free to watch on TV, their app, and YouTube,’ he said.

‘It’s the right call after a hard year,’ he added.

The news will come as a relief to fans of all four clubs involved, with tickets and access to stadiums still limited due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Chelsea have received an allocation of 5,800 tickets for the final, but Blues fans can expect to pay up to £515 for a ticket, while Manchester City said they would pay travel costs for the 6,000 fans heading to Portugal as well as the Covid tests.

Fans of Manchester United and Villarreal will however not have to fork out as much money to watch their team on 26 May.

Porto will now host the Champions League final instead of Istanbul three days later

Tickets for the match start at £112 and are as cheap as £35, with the stadium in Poland excepted to welcome around 9,500 fans.

The broadcaster also confirmed their punditry line-ups for the two finals, with former Man City midfielder Owen Hargreaves and ex-Chelsea forward Gianfranco Zola joined by Michael Owen and presenter Lynsey Hipgrave for the Champions League final.

On Saturday, Rio Ferdinand will watch former club Manchester United alongside Joleon Lescott and Joe Cole, with Gary Lineker leading proceedings.

Steve McManaman, Glenn Hoddle, Darren Fletcher and Des Kelly will also be part of the team covering the showdown in Gdansk.
