Petr Cech has claimed that the fact that Manchester United’s opening goal against Manchester City was allowed to stand proves that football’s lawmakers ‘don’t understand the game’.

United’s equaliser in their 2-1 victory over City was hugely controversial, with Bruno Fernandes scoring despite Marcus Rashford being offside.

Rashford didn’t actually touch the ball but he was heavily involved in the build-up to the goal as he shielded the ball following a pass from Casemiro.

Former Arsenal and Chelsea goalkeeper Cech wrote on Twitter: ‘The first United goal just proved the people who make the rules don’t understand the game.’

City had taken the lead through Jack Grealish, with Fernandes equalising before Rashford scored the winner for United.

The result means that United, who are third in the table, are now just one point behind City.

City defender Manuel Akanji expressed his frustration with the decision.

Akanji said: ‘The first goal is a joke that it’s allowed. Rashford is clearly offside. I understand he doesn’t touch the ball, but he runs for 30 metres chasing it and then he stops because Bruno is coming in behind him.

‘The referee has to at least look at the situation. Probably the pressure got to him in the stadium, that’s why he decided to let it go.’

United, who have been in impressive form of late, are now just one point behind City in the Premier League table.

The win will increase United’s belief that they can challenge for the title this season. They are currently six points behind leaders Arsenal having played a game more. The two sides face each other next weekend.
