Cavani ‘rejects’ Man Utd contract extension after making career-ending choice
Edinson Cavani has reportedly turned down the offer of a Manchester United contract extension in order to return to South America.
The veteran forward joined United on a one-year deal last summer after being released by Paris Saint-Germain, and he has scored seven goals in 25 appearances for the Red Devils this season.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been pleased with Cavani's work ethic and his influence on young forwards Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial, but Cavani's stay in Manchester will seemingly be a short one if reports are to be believed.
Argentinean publication Ole state that the Uruguayan forward has made up his mind to join Boca Juniors in the summer and see out his career with the club, fulfilling a lifelong dream as he does so.
Boca are still skippered by the former United forward Carlos Tevez, but the 37-year-old could be replaced in Buenos Aires by Cavani, who is three years his junior.
The report adds that Cavani has already spoken to Boca Juniors president Juan Roman Riquelme, and made clear that he wants to end his days in Europe in order to join his boyhood club.
Speaking last month, Solskjaer had seemed hopeful that United would be able to get Cavani to agree to a new deal.
"I can only say Edinson has done well," he said.
"I’ve been impressed by him, he’s really gelled in the group and we’ll sit down and speak with him in the near future to see his plans and our plans.
"It’s a good discussion to have, we always speak to the players and with his contract situation at the moment we’re very pleased with what he’s done."
