Cavani intends to sign for Barcelona when Man Utd contract expires in summer

Edinson Cavani feels he can play at the top of his game for the next two seasons at least and a move to Barcelona this summer window is highly desirable.

The 34-year-old’s contract with Manchester United expires at the end of this campaign, having agreed on a one-year extension to his deal last summer, but he has hopes for a move to the Nou Camp, according to an exclusive report in The Times.

However, the Uruguay forward is reportedly also moved by Ralf Rangnick – United's incoming interim manager – and wishes to see if there’s a future under him. But if that does not work out, the intention is to head to Spain to fulfil the rest of what he perceives to be the best years of his career.

Barcelona are enduring a dire financial period and so do not have the funds to buy the striker – however, they would be able to snap up the former Paris Saint-Germain player on a free as his contract would have ended at Old Trafford.

Cavani’s season has been plagued by injuries, while United’s re-signing of Cristiano Ronaldo has meant that the forward has featured mainly on the substitutes bench.

But he’s enjoyed a good spell with the Red Devils, scoring 17 goals during his first season. However this campaign, he’s only found the net only once in eight appearances.

Cavani has been a long-term target for Barcelona. Having played in Italy, France and England, it’s thought that he would like to try his hand in La Liga. He was even on the verge of joining Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2020 – but United came in with a better deal.

United face Arsenal at Old Trafford on Thursday night. It is expected to be Michael Carrick’s final fixture as caretaker manager until Rangnick officially takes his place in the dugout.
