Casemiro comes under fire from Man Utd fans after Sevilla defeat

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews the Sevilla game

Casemiro has received mass backlash from Manchester United fans for his reaction to their Europa League exit on Thursday night. The Red Devils’ dreadful record against Sevilla continued with a 3-0 humiliation at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, crashing out of the quarter-finals.

Missed chances and individual mistakes combined with misfortune saw United fumble a two-goal lead in last week’s first leg at Old Trafford to draw 2-2.

And errors were prevalent again in Spain, with David de Gea and Harry Maguire primary culprits, as United’s five-match wait for a win over Sevilla agonisingly continued.

Youssef En-Nesyri’s brace on either side of Loic Bade’s sucker punch at the start of the second half crushed Erik ten Hag’s hopes of European glory in his maiden season.

But Casemiro didn’t appear devastated after full-time, captured by cameras smiling and laughing with Portuguese referee Artur Soares Dias.

And many supporters were left fuming by the 31-year-old midfielder’s actions after tasting elimination for the first time under Ten Hag.

@DAVEAFAF tweeted: “Don’t know what f***ing Casemiro is smiling about with the ref? The booking that’s got him another day off if he’s still at Utd and we’re in Europe next season? Disrespectful of the travelling fans, if nothing else.”

@ReDevil0897 ranted: “Those players are pathetic. Absolutely f***ing s***e. 2-0 up to 2-5. Now I’m seeing Casemiro smiling, having a laugh with the referee… F***ing atrocious.”

@DJDons83 wrote: “Casemiro laughing with the ref right after that dreadful performance?! Clearly not as gutted as the fans standing on the terrace who’ve paid a fortune to watch that shambles!”

@Yzarc82 bemoaned: “Not being funny, but the whistle has just gone after an absolutely woeful performance, and Casemiro starts laughing with the ref like we haven’t just been knocked out. Wtf!!”

Casemiro received a 56th-minute yellow card in one of his poorer performances for United, which would’ve seen him suspended for the semi-final first leg against Juventus.

The Brazilian has helped lay the foundations of Ten Hag’s project at Old Trafford after his £70million move from Real Madrid last summer.

But his in-game discipline record, which was non-existent during his illustrious Los Blancos career, has caused frustration.

UEFA rules state that the ban won’t carry over to next season, whether United qualify for the Champions League via the top four or remain in the Europa League.
