Carragher’s 2021/22 predictions proved right with Man Utd’s Brighton drubbing
Jamie Carragher has proved to be something of a master in predicting the future after watching his Manchester United prophecy come to life against Brighton.
The Liverpool legend, along with his Sky Sports Monday Night Football sidekick Gary Neville, was asked at the start of the season to ponder the champions of England, top four finishers, overachievers, underachievers and top goalscorer in the top flight. And with three games to go before the curtain comes down on the domestic campaign, the 44-year-old has every right to be delighted with his picks.
Embracing his inner psychic, Carragher guessed that Brighton would overachieve this season and felt United would underwhelm — and their latest encounter would appear to confirm he was spot on in his assessment. The Red Devils fell to a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton on Saturday, with Pascal Gross, Leandro Trossard, Marc Cucurella and Moises Caicedo punishing them for a woeful display.
The Sky Sports pundit was keen to rub salt into the wound by reposting an image — which contained his predictions — after the game to his 1.9million followers. His caption was simple enough to rile up frustrated United fans, who booed off their team at the Amex Stadium, with a simple “BRIMUN” hashtag.
But that’s not the only prediction Carragher seems to have got right. He chose Manchester City as favourites to reclaim the title, which is hardly surprising given they won it by 12 points last season ahead of United. If they win all four of their remaining games this season, City will be guaranteed champions — thus ending Liverpool’s hopes of completing an incredible quadruple. Jurgen Klopp ’s side saw their hopes of achieving the unprecedented landmark dented after a 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Saturday.
Klopp’s side have at least exceeded Carragher’s predicted finish of third in the table, with Chelsea’s disappointing form ensuring that Thomas Tuchel’s side can only finish third at best. The final top-four spot is still up for grabs, but United’s poor form has confirmed they are no longer mathematically able to finish there.

And finally, selecting Mohamed Salah for the top goalscorer may have been a simple choice but hindsight is golden. Chelsea had signed Romelu Lukaku for £97.5m over the summer and the Belgian was expected to rival Salah and the likes of Harry Kane. Instead, he has scored only seven goals for the Blues, while Anfield’s Egyptian king leads the way on 21 strikes in the top flight.
In comparison to his Monday Night Football colleague Neville, Carragher has emerged unscathed. Neville also chose Man City to be champions, but ultimately went wrong in picking United to finish above Liverpool in the league. He also chose Everton as his overachievers and Arsenal as the team to disappoint, but the opposite has proved to be the case.
What it proves is that even the biggest football brains can get it wrong sometimes, especially considering the unpredictable and wild ride that the Premier League often delivers for fans and pundits alike. In Carragher’s case, he will be hoping his predictions are spot on again in 2022-23 if he chooses Liverpool to clinch the title next season.
