Carragher tells rivals to accept City are BETTER then '99 Treble side

Just ADMIT it! Jamie Carragher tells Gary Neville and Co to accept that this Man City team are BETTER than Manchester United’s ’99 Treble winners and Arsenal’s Invincibles

  • Man United are the only English side to have won a Treble, doing so back in 1999
  • Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal remained unbeaten in the 2003-04 Premier League

Jamie Carragher has called on former Manchester United and Arsenal players to admit that the current Manchester City side are better than their historical comparators.

The Liverpool legend sent out a jibe on Twitter ahead of the Champions League final, with City chasing a historic Treble.

Pep Guardiola’s side will take on Inter Milan in Istanbul – the site of Carragher’s dramatic continental triumph over AC Milan in 2005 with Liverpool – for a chance to match their arch-nemesis’ record.

The Citizens have this term been hailed as one of the greatest sides of all-time, having already won a Premier League-FA Cup Double ahead of the showpiece spectacle in Turkey.

Yet many claim that their achievements are not quite comparable to those of United and Arsenal, which came much earlier in the Premier League era.

The Citizens are eyeing up a Treble when they take on Inter Milan in the Champions League final

‘Champions League final tonight & I want Inter Milan to win obviously!’ the Reds legend wrote on Twitter.

‘But is there any past player out there who played for Man Utd’s treble team or the Arsenal invincibles who can just be honest & say this Manchester City team are better than their own team!!!!’

Numerous comparisons have been drawn between City and the other two sides considered to be the greatest in English football history, given the way they have excelled this season.

They have lost six games in the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League, ending the season on a 25-match unbeaten run before defeat in the final game of the league season to Brentford, having already won the title.

City can pull off a feat by winning the Champions League that only one other side has managed – Man United.

It would prove a major blow to the Red Devils’ legacy and their claim to being the biggest club in Manchester, with City dominating their near-neighbours in recent years.

The other side with a case to be the best in English history are Arsene Wenger’s Invincible Arsenal side.

The Gunners went a whole season – and 49 games in total – unbeaten to lift the 2003-04 title in style, in a team boasting the likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp.
