Jamie Carragher has slammed Richard Keys as a "sad desperate man" after he criticised his comments about the England manager.
As rumours circulated that Thomas Tuchel could be in line for the England job after Gareth Southgate's men were dumped out of the World Cup, Carragher insisted the England boss should be English. However, Keys staunchly disagreed with the Liverpool legend.
He tweeted, with a link to Carragher's article: "What sort of nonsense is this? It borders on racism. The England coach should be the best person available England should not hide behind closed borders & minds. Jamie Carragher: The England manager should always be English!"

And Carragher hit back: "'It borders on racism'. I hope you send similar tweets to a lot of journalists who have the same opinion, or is it because I work for Sky?
"You are a sad desperate man @richardajkeys! Ps love the blogs!" Carragher had already cheekily defended his comments on Twitter when he quipped: "Just to clarify, I voted Remain!!!"
Carragher's comments come as the future of Southgate has started to be looked at through a microscope – the current boss has until the end of Euro 2024 on his current deal.

The Three Lions have only ever had two foreign managers, Swede Sven Goran-Eriksson and Italian Fabio Capello. However, Tuchel has thrown his name in the gate to become the third foreign boss if Southgate walks.
Mauricio Pochettino has also been linked with the role, who would mark the first non-European to take charge of the Three Lions.
