Carragher pinpoints two Arsenal players Klopp would love at Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp would love to have half of Arsenal’s team at Anfield, claims Jamie Carragher. The former Reds defender says Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli in particular would be at the top of Klopp’s wishlist.

Liverpool welcome Arsenal to Anfield on Sunday in contrasting form to where each club was 12 months ago. It is the Gunners who are attempting to pip Manchester City to the Premier League title, while their Merseyside opponents are outsiders to finish in the top four.

Arsenal won the reverse fixture at the Emirates last October, with Martinelli opening the scoring in the first minute and Saka grabbing a brace. Martinelli is a player who Klopp has publicly praised on a number of occasions since he first started to make an impact on the English top flight.

Both he and Saka have been standout attackers for Arsenal this season. But Carragher admits there is now no chance either player would leave Arsenal for his old club.

He wrote in the Telegraph: “Jurgen Klopp has had little cause to be envious of other squads during his Liverpool reign. He does now.

“He must wish half of Arteta’s team were in his starting XI. Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli bring the lightning pace and penetration that Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane introduced to Klopp’s 4-3-3 system five years ago.

“Not so long ago, Klopp must have investigated if it was possible to lure the Arsenal duo to Merseyside. Suffice to say that ship has well and truly sailed.”

Carragher can see similarities between Liverpool now and Arsenal from when Arteta first took over. He hopes Klopp is willing to make the sacrifices Arteta did when he began an overhaul of the Gunners squad after admitting Sunday’s match is a must-win for the north Londoners.

Carragher added: “The side Klopp is trying to get a tune out of for the last 10 games of this season are not so dissimilar in make-up to what Arteta inherited in 2019, full of ageing players on big contracts who need to be eased out so the promising youngsters and next signings can shine.

“The difference is Arteta was prepared to be more pragmatic based on the tools he had when he took over. What worries me about this game is how rigid Klopp is in believing that the team must play the same high-pressing way, no matter how good the opponent or whether his personnel are able to execute it.”
