Carabao Cup final U-turn in the works which could see fans attend Wembley clash
The Carabao Cup final could reportedly be played in front of fans as the EFL push for the clash to be part of a test for the return of supporters.
Football matches have been played primarily behind closed doors for a year now amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Manchester City and Tottenham are due to meet at Wembley for the League Cup final on April 25.
The showpiece game had originally been excluded from the list of pilots, though the FA Cup final, on May 15, is set to have a limited number of fans.
But the Carabao Cup final could be played in front of supporters too with EFL chairman Rick Parry putting up a determined campaign.
And the Daily Mail report that fans being allowed is now being considered for that match, as well as for the FA Cup semi-finals.
The EFL is understood to be confident it can safely deliver a final with supporters in the stadium.
Asked on Sky Sports about fans attending the final, Parry said recently: "Clearly we are hopeful. We didn’t enter into this season thinking we were going to be without fans.
"Of course, the Carabao Cup isn’t a dress rehearsal for us, it’s the pinnacle of the season and a really important event."
While another EFL spokesperson said last month: "As has been our approach throughout the pandemic, the EFL wants to see supporters back in our stadia as soon as it is safe to do so.
"We will continue to work with clubs, DCMS, the SGSA and local authorities to this end.
"Following a successful fan pilot programme in the autumn, the EFL and member clubs have shown test events for fans can be safely delivered with the appropriate measures in place.
