Canelo Alvarez APOLOGISES to Lionel Messi admitting ‘I got carried away’ by his love for his country in high-profile row after accusing with the Argentina star of ‘cleaning the floor with our jersey and flag’ after 2-0 victory
- Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez appears to have now buried the hatchet with Lionel Messi
- The four-weight boxing champion claimed he ‘got carried away’ on Twitter
- He also insisted that he wanted to apologise not just to Messi but to ‘Argentina’
- Canelo also then got into a spat with Sergio Aguero, long-time friend of Messi
- The row began after Canelo believed Messi kicked a Mexican shirt on the floor
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has issued an apology to Lionel Messi over Twitter to officially end their spat, after the four-weight world champion boxer accused the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner of disrespecting his country, Mexico.
Canelo had launched an attack on the PSG star over social media following footage of the Albiceleste’s celebrations after a 2-0 win over El Tri appeared to show Messi’s foot brushing against a Mexican jersey on the floor of the dressing-room.
Several players had rushed to the defence of Messi, including friends and former team-mates Cesc Fabregas and Sergio Aguero, as well as Mexican internationals Miguel Layun and Andres Guadrado.

Canelo officially buried the hatchet with the Argentine hero, insisting that he got ‘carried away’ due to the love he feels for his country.
It read: ‘These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologise to Messi and the people of Argentina.
‘Every day we learn something new and this time it was my turn.
‘I wish both teams much success in their matches today and here we will continue to support Mexico until the end.’

The argument started with the fighter threatening Messi after first seeing the footage, in the wake of a starring role from the 35-year-old in condemning Mexico to a 2-0 defeat and the prospect of a first group stage exit since 1978.
As well as claiming the Argentina star had disrespected Mexico, he issued an ominous threat, saying: ‘He better pray to God that I don’t find him.’
And although Messi himself has so far kept quiet on the issue, Aguero was quick to wade in, saying: ‘Mr. Canelo, don’t look for excuses or problems, surely you don’t know about football and what happens in a locker room.’
Aguero rushed to his friend’s defence before beginning a war of words with Canelo
However, rather than quell Canelo’s fury, he appeared to only fan the flame and turn the boxer’s attentions on himself.
He was met with the fiery response: ‘You too, b******? You used to write me, “oh, oh, Canelo”, and now you’re crying. Don’t be a hypocrite, b******.’
The supposed ‘victim’ of Messi’s disrespect, Guadrado, got involved, calling the argument ‘silly’ and defending the Argentina skipper and criticising Canelo’s actions.

Even Javier Hernandez – the all-time Mexican record goalscorer – had his say, vowing in jest to defend Aguero with his life.
The pair continued to trade blows, with Aguero claiming the boxer had earned ‘the hatred of all Argentina’ and Canelo sending the former striker a WhatsApp audio message before the eventual apology was offered.
Neither Aguero nor Messi has responded to the apology that Canelo has extended, and it is yet to be seen whether the boxer’s words will be accepted.
