Amid all the concerns off the pitch, the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations gets underway on Sunday afternoon with the opening Group A match between Cameroon and Burkina Faso.

Cameroon, hosting the tournament for the first time in 50 years, has seen the build-up overshadowed by conflict in the country’s Anglophone regions, as well as an escalating Covid crisis, which, at one time, placed the event in doubt.

But Cameroon will head to Yaounde’s Olembe Stadium to get this latest competition underway as they take on Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso didn’t manage to qualify for the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, but they can draw inspiration from the fact that they managed to finish in third place in 2017.

They are likely to be heavily reliant on Bertrand Traore, who has the most international goals out of the current squad with 12.

Sportsmail’s AFCON expert Geremi made 118 appearances for Cameroon and won the tournament in 2000 and 2002.

The former Chelsea midfielder believes that Cameroon can impress at this edition of the competition.

Geremi described goalkeeper Onana as Cameroon’s standout player.

Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who is on loan at Napoli from Fulham, starts for Cameroon.

Up front for Toni Conceicao’s side is Karl Toko Ekambi, and the Lyon forward could have a major part to play during this tournament.

There are some familiar names in both lineups, including Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is set to join Inter Milan from Ajax on a free transfer in the summer. Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting of Bayern Munich is only fit enough to make the bench after a knee injury.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, are without defender Edmond Tapsoba because of Covid. They can, however, call upon Bertrand Traore of Aston Villa.
