Burnley star Roberts sent off for handball on line – but he does not touch it
Burnley ace Connor Roberts was given a straight red card after the referee judged the Wales forward to have handled the ball on the line.
Roberts checked back onto his goal line to cover a looping ball which appeared to be drifting into the goal. As he jumped up to head the ball, which eventually bounced off the crossbar, he tapped the goalpost to stop himself from hitting the woodwork.
However, referee David Webb left the Burnley players and the whole of Turf Moor aghast when he gave Roberts a straight red card and awarded Middlesbrough a penalty. And it’s fair to say, the rest of the football world couldn’t believe it either.

"And the winner of the most ridiculous red card award … Connor Roberts … ball hits the bar, he gets red card for deliberately handling a ball he never touched. Weird. Justice that the pen was saved. Great turnaround. Great win," one Burnley fan wrote on social media.
"Just seen the Connor Roberts red card… Wow," another flummoxed supporter commented. "That Connor Roberts red card for Burnley, even Stevie Wonder would of seen it hitting the bar," said a furious football fan.

Fortunately for the Clarets, it did not prove to be too damaging as the penalty was missed by Chuba Akpom. Vincent Konpany’s side ran out 3-1 winners, extending their lead at the top of the Championship to six points.
The league leaders had actually fallen behind when Duncan Watmore netted in the early stages of half-time. However, two goals in seven minutes from Manuel Benson put them in the driving seat, before an own goal from Boro ace Jonny Howson secured the three points.
The bizarre spot kick would have been an 89th minute lifeline for Carrick’s side, who would have had the best part of seven minutes of added time to find a late equaliser against ten men. But Arijanet Muric’s fine save from Akpom ensure there would be no nervy finish for Burnley to endure.
The Clarets will surely appeal Howson’s late red card which will currently rule him out of Burnley’s upcoming matches against Birmingham City, Stoke City, and Swansea City.
