Bruno Lage reveals that he is 'honoured' to have been Wolves manager

Bruno Lage says he is ‘honoured’ to have been Wolves boss… and hints his dismissal was down to bad luck with injuries as he insists their fortunes will ‘surely improve’ when strikers return

  • Bruno Lage has posted a farewell message to Wolves fans on social media
  • Lage was sacked after their defeat to West Ham left them in the bottom three
  • The 46-year-old has said that it was an honour to be the manager of the club
  • He also argues that the club’s form will improve once injured strikers are back fit

Former Wolves manager Bruno Lage has issued a statement on social media following his sacking from the club earlier this week.

The 46-year-old was relieved of his duties after the club’s poor start to the season saw them drop into the Premier League’s relegation with six points having only won one game in their first eight games.

Wolves were beaten by West Ham on the weekend as goals from Gianluca Scamacca and Jarrod Bowen meant the West Midlands side had lost half of their Premier League games this season.

Lage has now posted a message thanking the club and supporters revealing that he was ‘honoured’ to be the manager of the Molineaux side.

He wrote on Instagram: ‘I am remarkably honoured to have served Wolverhampton F.C. I am indebted to chairman Guo and Jeff for such opportunity. I am also indebted to every one working at the club for making me feel at home.

‘To the players, for their professionalism and commitment with us. To the supporters, which backed me since the very beginning.

‘We leave behind a successful first season, with many remarkable matches and a record 9 away wins for Wolves in the Premier League. Now, your full support is more important than ever.’

The former Benfica manager did defend himself to a point as he insisted that the team did not lose when a striker started the match.

Wolves have struggled in the attack this season as summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic picked up an ACL injury in the first half of his debut and Raul Jimenez has also struggled for fitness. Former Chelsea forward Deigo Costa was signed on a free transfer two weeks ago, but is still building up his match fitness.

Lage is confident the team’s fortunes will improve once the trio’s injury concerns lessen and they are able to put more minutes in on the pitch.

He added: ‘The team, which never lost a match with a striker in the initial lineup, will surely improve as strikers become available. Diego will be increasingly ready, Raul will help when he’s back, and Sasa will be very important in the future.

‘I’m confident that, within the next 7 matches until the November break, the team will be mid-table and, as of January, aim to the top 7. I will always be rooting for you. Thank you.’

Wolves are now on the hunt for their next manager and are tipped to be interested in appointing former Spain and Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui after he was sacked by the LaLiga side after their thrashing by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League this week.
