Bruno Fernandes fires subtle shots at Man Utd team-mates over effort “every day”
Bruno Fernandes has fired a subtle dig at his Manchester United team-mates about the effort they need to put in during training if they want to be selected for matches.
The Portuguese midfielder was speaking before United’s trip to Chelsea, with caretaker boss Michael Carrick dropping Luke Shaw and Cristiano Ronaldo from the team that lost to Watford.
With Harry Maguire suspended, Fernandes was named captain for the visit to Stamford Bridge, which is set to be the United squad’s last chance to impress incoming interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
Heading into the Premier League clash, the Red Devils sat a lowly ninth in the table, having endured a terrible run of results.
And though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was held responsible for those defeats and subsequently sacked, Fernandes hinted his team-mates need to step up their performances.
The 27-year-old made it clear that those players who had been dropped must maintain their performance levels in training if they wish to return to the starting line-up.
“We have to prove something every day. On the training pitch, in the games, every day you have to prove your qualities if you want to play in the first XI,” he told Sky Sports.
“If you deserve to play in the first XI, you have to prove it every day. That's what I'm about, I'm doing that since I came to the club and started playing football.

The dropped players will need to heed Fernandes’ warning quickly, with Rangnick expected to arrive at Old Trafford next week.
The German arrives with a remit to turn around results quickly with United 12 points behind leaders Chelsea heading into their clash with Thomas Tuchel’s men.
