Bruno Fernandes’ Alex Telles revelation shows his reaction to Luke Shaw role
Bruno Fernandes has made a revelation about Manchester United defender Alex Telles that shows how he is reacting to Luke Shaw’s role.
The Brazilian arrived at Old Trafford on transfer deadline day in October for £15m, with the aim of bringing more competition for the Englishman.
With two Primeria Liga titles and Champions League experience, the 28-year-old was expected to stroll straight into the starting XI.
But Shaw has enjoyed a revival in form, making 20 starts in all competitions and helping his side concede just three goals in their last five games.
Fernandes, though, has revealed that Telles is not taking it lying down and has been putting in the work to get back in contention.
Speaking to MUTV about his free kicks – having scored a set piece to beat Liverpool in the FA Cup – the midfielder said: "I think almost every day.
"Sometimes he [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] has to kick me out of the training to stop.
"I'm always working on that kind of situation. I like to watch and learn from Juan [Mata] because I think he is a really good specialist.
"I think in training we stay there most of the time — me and Juan stay longer, but also Alex, Rashy [Marcus Rashford], Fred also stays with us."
Telles has only made 15 appearances in all competitions, with his last league start coming in the 3-2 win over Sheffield United last month.
He has been kept on the bench for the last four games – and pundit Graeme Souness believes it shows Shaw has responded to the challenge.
Speaking after United’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, the Scot said: "For me, looking at Liverpool as a Liverpool supporter and thinking the difference between where they've been for the last three years and where they are right now is the front three.
"The front three today, for me, no sparkle, no real special moments for them.
"De Gea didn't have many saves. They huffed and puffed Liverpool but nothing special. No one was skipping past a defender, committing the next defenders to come out and openings are there.
"That didn't happen for them today. Mane and Salah were kept very quiet.”
