Bruce delivers brutal response to criticism of laughing after Man Utd defeat

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has hit back after he was criticised for laughing with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the Magpies' 3-1 defeat to Manchester United on Monday.

The defeat left Newcastle in 17th place and they are just three points off the relegation zone, having won just two of their last 13 Premier League games.

Fans took to social media to voice their displeasure at seeing Bruce sharing a joke with Solskjaer moments after the defeat.

When asked about the exchange in his pre-match press conference ahead of Newcastle's game against Wolves on Saturday, Bruce issued a furious response.

"Listen, I've known Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for 20 years," Bruce said. "If I'm caught smiling with him… He was complimenting us on how well we played.

"That's it. So if that's a bad thing that I've smiled with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then, unfortunately, OK. Let it be."

Bruce also expressed confidence that his side could stay up, adding: "We are coming to the tickly part. When the daffodils are up that is the sign the crux part is upon us.

"Fulham won two in a week. What a difference that makes. It is all to play for. It is not just Fulham. There are 6-7 looking nervously over their shoulder. We are one of them. There is a long way to go. All to play for.

"We still have a lead. It is the accumulation of points over a season and that will not change for me.

"Can we finish above them? I am quietly confident we can do that.
