Celtic captain Scott Brown will end his 14-year spell at the club to join Aberdeen as a player-coach this summer, it has been confirmed.

The 35-year-old has agreed a pre-contract deal, and will join up with his former team-mate Stephen Glass at Pittodrie.

Newly-appointed Glass, who has returned from a spell with Atlanta United 2 in America, said of Brown’s signing: ‘The opportunity to bring a player of Scott’s calibre, a leader who has more European appearances for Celtic than any other player, is a huge coup for me and for Aberdeen.’

Brown headed to Aberdeen to undergo a medical on Thursday, and has now agreed terms on a two-year contract both playing and coaching with the Dons.

The midfielder played alongside Glass at Hibernian earlier in his career, before heading to Celtic in 2007 where he has gone on to win 10 Scottish Premiership titles, six Scottish Cups and six Scottish League Cups.

Speaking about the move, Brown said: ‘There is no doubt I had a lot to deliberate when deciding my next steps, particularly after enjoying fourteen successful years at Celtic.

‘However, the opportunity to join Aberdeen, a Club entering an exciting new period with my former team-mate Stephen now at the helm, was one I couldn’t pass up.

‘Once this season concludes, I’m looking forward to joining Stephen, the playing and coaching staff and everyone at Aberdeen FC. I am totally committed to the challenge that lies ahead in meeting the ambitions of the Club and its fans.

‘I still feel I have got a lot to give, not only on the pitch, but in a broader capacity as I embark on my coaching journey. I will be relentless in my quest for success for Aberdeen.’

Brown’s decision means he will play in his final Old Firm derby at the start of May, in a season where Celtic have relinquished the reigns on the Scottish Premiership title.

He does, though, move to an Aberdeen side entering a fresh new era under Glass, and chairman Dave Cormack is expected to provide the funds to help Aberdeen become a force again at the top of the table.

The Sun also report that Glass wants to bring England coach Allan Russell in as his co-assistant manager.

Russell is currently with Gareth Southgate’s squad for their World Cup qualifiers and would be expected to travel to the Euros with the Three Lions this summer even if he agrees to take up a position at Aberdeen.

There is also the chance that he will not leave the England setup, and instead combine both duties.
