Brentford respond to Arsenal's opening offer for David Raya

Arsenal’s opening proposal for David Raya is set to be turned down by Brentford but the two clubs remain in discussions over reaching an agreement for the Spaniard.

Raya, 27, has made it clear to the Bees that he wants to join Arsenal.

The Spanish international has attracted interest from Spurs, Chelsea and Bayern Munich this summer but he wants to move to the Emirates in order to challenge Aaron Ramsdale for a starting spot.

Brentford made it clear at the start of the window that Raya can leave the club for a fee of £40m.

But Arsenal have not come close to that fee with their opening proposal.

The Athletic therefore say Brentford are set to reject the Gunners’ offer.

However, the two teams remain in dialogue over a fee and there’s optimism on all sides to get a deal done.

The deal could take Arsenal’s spending past the £230m mark following the arrivals of Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz.

Despite his impressive form last season, Arteta wants competition for Ramsdale.

Raya is renowned as one of the best in the league with the ball at his feet and he played more passes than any other goalkeeper last season.
