Brentford boss Thomas Frank compares Ivan Toney to Harry Kane

Thomas Frank heaps praise on Brentford star Ivan Toney after striker nets winner against Blackburn as Bees boss compares Championship top scorer’s impressive numbers to Harry Kane

  • Thomas Frank has drawn comparisons between Ivan Toney and Harry Kane
  • Brentford star Toney leads the Championship scoring charts with 26 goals
  • The Englishman has also registered nine assists for the promotion hopefuls
  • Frank says that ‘only Harry Kane’ can deliver the same numbers as his striker
  • Toney joined in a £5m switch from Peterborough, replacing Ollie Watkins

Thomas Frank reckons Ivan Toney’s outstanding form for Championship promotion chasers Brentford is worthy of comparison to England captain Harry Kane.

‘Now it’s 26 goals in the league, nine assists – crazy numbers in this league. It has also shown his all-round game because normally it’s only Harry Kane who can do those numbers,’ said Brentford manager Frank, following Toney’s penalty winner at Blackburn on Friday night.

Brentford identified £5million Toney, player of the year in League One last year after scoring 24 times in 32 appearances for Peterborough, as the replacement for Ollie Watkins, who moved to Aston Villa following Wembley play-off heartache last August.

He has already surpassed expectations – and Watkins’ goal tally of 2019-20 – as the London club attempt to seal an automatic promotion that would allow a man who turns 25 on Tuesday to add to his tally of 10 minutes of Premier League action.

That came via two substitute appearances for Newcastle against Chelsea and Manchester United as a teenager following an early career move from Northampton, before he dropped down the divisions, as Kane did with then third-tier Leyton Orient 10 years ago.

‘There are very few players who are like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, the two best in the world. Almost every other player needs to go out somewhere else, even Kane went out to League One – and there are always ups and downs, no direct route to success,’ added Frank.

Toney, a £5m arrival from Peterborough, has 26 goals and nine assists in the league this season

Frank said only Tottenham and England star Harry Kane can demonstrate the same numbers

‘Maybe in hindsight it was a fantastic scenario for him that it didn’t go well for him in Newcastle because it’s so difficult for any young player from the academy to go into a Premier League side.

‘Name me one player who stayed with one club and went through. Maybe Phil Foden? But he’s going to be one of the best players in the world; an Andres Iniesta type. For most it’s a different pathway.’

Meanwhile, Dane Frank playfully revealed he is so confident in Toney’s deliberate technique from the spot that he messaged him in midweek to suggest Erling Haaland and Messi should be analysing it following their misses in the Champions League.

‘He’s good on penalties and I texted him to tell him Haaland and Messi should look at him because he does it very well,’ he said.
