Brendan Rodgers ranks Old Firm above Liverpool vs Man Utd and Merseyside derby

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers reckons "there's nothing like" the Old Firm – ranking it above Liverpool vs Manchester United and the Merseyside derby.

Rodgers completed his return to Parkhead earlier this month for a second spell in charge having previously managed the Bhoys from May 2016 to February 2019.

He has some work to do to win the supporters back given the controversial nature of his exit to join Leicester City. But his comments about their rivalry with Rangers may help.

Appearing on the Tubes and Ange Golf Life YouTube channel, Rodgers said of their matches: "They are amazing. I’ve been involved in Liverpool vs Manchester United and Liverpool vs Everton games that are tough.

"And even Swansea vs Cardiff was a big derby as well in the Championship. But I have to say Celtic vs Rangers, there’s nothing like it.

"Just the intensity, the passion – there’s so many reasons as to why it’s so tense. But when you come out the other side and get the result, then it’s an amazing feeling."

Soccer AM legend Tubes proceeded to ask Rodgers about what the week leading up to an Old Firm clash is like in Glasgow.

He replied: "I think for the players that have experience of it, so like going back Callum McGregor whose the captain, whose a brilliant player, he’s had many, many games against Rangers.

"It’s important for those guys to let the new guys understand what the game’s about. There’s that focus on the game and of course the media around the game is huge worldwide, but there’s always that extra spring in the step."

Rodgers also admitted his "regret" at hurting the Celtic fans when he walked out over four years ago, hoping to "take away some of the disappointment" when the Scottish Premiership kicks off August 5.
