Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has slammed the challenge that ended young Will Alves’ season early as the “worst tackle I’ve seen on a football field”. Alves had just made his first senior appearance of the season for Leicester in the Carabao Cup, coming on for Harvey Barnes in the final 10 minutes.
And the 17-year-old was back in action for Leicester’s Under-18 side in their FA Youth Cup clash with Wolves the following day. Alves had dominated for Leicester’s youth side, controlling the midfield and gave his side the lead in extra-time.
Leicester soon went 3-1 up with frustration settling in for Wolves and Caden Voice ended up taking out his anger in an ugly manner on Alves. As Alves tricked his way through a number of Wolves players, Voice came in with a studs-up tackle on the Leicester teenager’s knee.
A melee ensued on the pitch with Alves’ team-mates immediately running up to confront Voice before the Wolves star was shown a straight red card. Alves later announced on social media that he would miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL from the challenge.
Rodgers was the man to give Alves his debut back in January this year and has kept the teenager in and around the first-team on several occasions. And the Leicester boss was still seething about the manner of Alves’ injury, taking aim at Voice for his horror tackle.
“It’s a sad one for us,” Rodgers said. “We lost one of our young talents, Will Alves, who came on in the MK Dons game.
“He wanted to play in the Youth Cup game the night after and played in that. They went through in the tie, our Under-18s, but he was taken out with one of the worst challenges I’ve seen on a football field.
“It’s such a shame for a young player who’s 17, who’s really making his way in the game and making his mark in training and the way he’s been. It’s a real disappointing one for us. We wish him a speedy recovery in getting back. It’ll be the rest of the season he’ll be out for.
“His rehab will start over these next few weeks and he’ll have an operation after that.”
