Breaking Rooney’s England record would be "unreal" for "model pro" Ellen White

Ellen White is on the brink of history.

The Manchester City hotshot needs just four more England goals to surpass Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney and become the country's leading international goalscorer of all-time. If that prospect wasn't exciting enough, she could achieve the remarkable feat on home soil during the women's Euros this summer, which begins today.

White is currently on 50 goals for the Lionesses. One more will move her above Harry Kane into second, three more will see her draw level with Rooney, while four during the tournament will guarantee her place in the history books. Sky Sports and England favourite Sue Smith says it would be an "unreal" achievement if White can break the record this summer.

"It would be unreal for her," Smith exclusively told Daily Star Sport at the launch of VoucherCodes' Women's EURO 2022 Spending Report.

"Obviously she had Covid and has missed the last two friendlies, so I think they're just looking after her at the moment. She is the ultimate pro. An absolute role model.

"She does everything she can do off the field to make sure she can be the best she is on the field. When you talk to her, she just says 'I'm so boring. All I do is I play football, I train and I recover'.

"But she's not, she's lovely and a great girl. She'll continue for a long period of time because of how professional she is and how she looks after herself."

White should have ample opportunities to break the record during this summer's European Championship, with England among the favourites to win the competition.

The Lionesses will play six matches if they go all the way to the final, although White may not have it all her own way up front. Boss Sarina Wiegman has plenty of options to choose from in attack, with Beth Mead, Alessio Russo, Lauren Hemp and Bethany England pushing for starts in the forward positions.

England begin their campaign against Austria tonight (Wednesday 6 July) at a sold-out Old Trafford.
