After a short playing career, Brown started life in the dugout at Clyde in 1977 and stayed at the club for nine years before moving on to manage Scotland’s youth sides.
He was promoted to manage the senior team in 1993, and would stay in charge of his country until 2001.
During this period, he guided Scotland to the 1996 European Championship and the World Cup two years later.
The team did not progress beyond the group stage on both occasions, and Brown resigned in 2001 after Scotland failed to qualify for the 2000 Euros and the 2002 World Cup.
He remains his nation’s longest-serving manager, having been in charge for 70 matches, winning 32 and losing 20.
After leaving his role with Scotland, Brown tried his luck south of the border when he joined Preston North End the following year.
After a two-year stint at Deepdale, Brown left England and finished his coaching career in Scotland, managing Motherwell between December 2009 and December 2010, before spending three years in the dugout at Aberdeen.
Having been succeeded by Derek McInnes in April 2013, Brown took up a position on the Aberdeen board.
